The Palace of the
Accademia Filarmonica is located in the middle of the eastern side of
San Carlo Square. Its front was designed by Castellamonte whereas the
interior is quite different from the others surrounding it. Havard de
Senantes, lieutenant-general of the Duke's army was the first owner. It
is not until a century later that its completion is documented under the
direction of Benedetto Alfieri master of the "classic baroque"
in Turin. A major change in the look of the Square was introduced by Alfieri
who converted in a solid pillar the light twin columns supporting the
arcades of the original project.
The Palace was completed by the last of the Isnardi di Caraglio, Angelo
who became the proprietor in 1737. Various architects worked on the palace
amongst them Benedetto Alfieri, Giovanni Battista Borra, Filippo Castelli.
At the death of A.Isnardi the palace was inherited by Asinari di San Marzano
who let it. In 1771 the French Ambassador, baron Louis de Choiseul gave
a ball in honour of the wedding of Luisa di Savoia with the Count de Provence
who after the restauration became King of France as Louis XVIII.
In 1782 the palace was sold to the Marquess Giuseppe Vincenzo Solaro del
Borgo and in 1838 sold it to the Accademia Filarmonica the present owner.
The Accademia, who was then primarity a school of music, asked architect
Talucchi to design and construct a hall for concerts. In 1840 the Odeo
was completed, its restauration decor along the rococò baroque
of the other rooms is the happy result as we see it today.
