THE ACCADEMIA FILARMONICA

In october 1814 a group of 50 friends fond of music started to meet regularly to practise and study. In 1838 they bought from Marquess Solaro del Borgo his palace which then became their definitive seat. It was also a school of music for young people but by the end of XX^ century it had assumed the role of a city club.

THE SOCIETA' DEL WHIST

It was a personal initiative of Count Camillo Benso di Cavour.
Being the cadet he was sent to the Army which he soon left. Before entering in politics he travelled whidely for business and social life in Switzerland, France and England. That is the scenario that lead to the Società del Whist a club quite different from the others in Italy and similar to those he had frequented abroad.
The initial group of 40 members represented almost exclusively the piedmontese aristocracy the dominant élite of "the Turin society". With them Cavour intended to spend time playing whist or in gentle conversation.

THE CLUB TODAY

Immediately after the last war the Whist had offered hospitality to members of the Accademia Filarmonica whilst their palace was repaired from the war damages. The members of the two clubs then voted to merge and in 1949, with the reconstruction completed, started the new life as one club.
